Antique Brass Enameled Box

This brass and enameled box has semi-precious stones set in the lid. The detail on the base and lid is enamel work. The shape is exquisite. The piece measures 7 in. in diameter and is 2 3/4 in. in height. There are three round feet on the bottom. There is an incised China mark on the bottom as well. This is an old Chinese brass piece and quite a find.

This bird lithograph is entitled, Campephaga Andersone. This is by J. Smit and is signed. Joseph Smit (1836-1929) was born in the Netherlands. He was invited to Britain by Philip Sclater in 1866 and did the lithography for Sclater's Exotic Ornithology. He also did the lithography for Joseph Wolf's Zoological Sketches (second series), as well as Daniel Elliott's monographs on the Phasianeidae and Paradiseida. Smit contributed regularly to the Transactions and the Proceedings of the Zoological Society, Ibis, and The Field. Beginning in the 1870s, he worked on the massive Catalogue of Birds in the Museum, and later on the Lord Lilford's Coloured Figures of the Birds in the British Museum. Considered . . . the best animal painter in England after the death of J. Wolf -- S. Peter Dance. The bottom will show M & N Hanbart Imp on the right bottom with J.Smit.lith on the left bottom. At the top right, the plate is numbered,P.Z.S. 1879 PL IV. The print is in a matted folder with a tissue insert. The size with the mat is 13 3/4 X 9 3/4 and the size of the print is approximately 8 1/8 X 5 1/2. This is a historical print of birds and dates around 1900. There is some yellowing, but no spots are apparent. This is one of several prints listed by this artist.

Wall Valet with Mirror and Brass Fittings

This brass hand hammered wall valet has a beveled mirror framed in hand hammered brass with two clothes brushes attached. The overall dimensions are 15 1/2 X 8 3/4 in. The beveled mirror is 8 3/4 by 5 in. The brushes have a brass back and are 6 3/4 by 1 3/4 in. The back is wood which shows a great deal of age. Although I find no markings, this valet is probably English. There are attached brackets for hanging at the top of the piece. The brushes hang at the middle of each side on the brass. This is a wonderful old piece.

This book is the Inaugural Spectacle Souvenier Edition by the Editors of Life. The copyright is 1961 by Time, Inc. The approximate 64 page book is made up of the pictoral story of the two days events. Included is the inaugural address. It is approximately 8 1/2 X 11 in. There is a tear at the middle edge of the back cover, but it is in otherwise very good condition.

J G Keulemans Lithograph

This is another lithograph in the antiquarian safari print series by J G Keulemans. It is titled Capra Picta.

John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912) learned lithography from Professor Hermann Schlegel while working in the Leyden Museum. Keulemans went on collecting expeditions in West Africa, where he bought a coffee plantation with the intention of settling. However, falling ill with fever, he migrated to London in 1869 and, sponsered by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, emerged as one of the finest and most prolific birds artists of all time, illustrating over 115 books while putting his distinctive stamp on every painting. The overall size of the mat and folder with a tissue overlay in between is 13 3/4 X 9 3/4. The print is 5 1/2 X 8 1/4. The plate number in the upper right corner is PZS 1872 PL LVIII and is signed. This work dates to approximately 1870. His work as well as the work of J. Smit have great detail.

This superb lithograph by J. Smit is titled Eliomys Melanurus. Joseph Smit (1836-1929) was born in the Netherlands. He was invited to Britain by Philip Sclater in 1866 and did the lithography for Sclater's Exotic Ornithology. He also did the lithography for Joseph Wolf's Zoological Sketches (second series), as well as Daniel Elliott's monographs on the Phasianeidae and Paradiseida. Smit contributed regularly to the Transactions and the Proceedings of the Zoological Society, Ibis, and The Field. Beginning in the 1870s, he worked on the massive Catalogue of Birds in the Museum, and later on the Lord Lilford's Coloured Figures of the Birds in the British Museum. The overall measurement including the mat is 13 3/4 X 9 3/4 in. with the print being 5 1/2 X 8 1/4. The plate number is PZS 1877 PL VI located in the upper right hand corner and it is signed in the margin. Other like prints are found in this category. This work dates around 1870. There is great attention to detail. They make a wonderful grouping. There is a tissue overlay in the middle of the folder containing the print.

This is another lithograph in the antiquarian safari print series by J G Keulemans. It is titled Lepus Hainanus.

This antique tea caddy is probably walnut and English. It measures 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 in. in height. The tea caddy is lined in velvet inside the top of the box which is in good condition for its age. There are two sections in the body with wooden lids on each section which are 3 1/2 by 3 3/4 in. There is a lock, but no key. This is an exceptional tea caddy.
